Although many of my figurative works loosely use photographic references as the genesis for the idea, I also paint directly from the model, as in the works here.

Working with a model is a different process from working from photos. There is a time element involved that can make the working process feel frantic. In my mind, there is an imperative to work the painting to the fullest extent possible within the limited time frame, because the model is expending their time and energy as well.

Looking up from a painting to see the model there, I am often startled from my involvement of the painting to once again consider the model and the pose.
