It’s clear that I’m not after a physical likeness in my paintings, but what am I after? The answer is elusive. As I paint, the answer clarifies within each painting.

Certainly I’m looking for a balance between the physical world and the internal world. The physical manifestation of a person is only a small part of what interests me. Their interior state, their body language, their interconnectedness with other people are equally compelling. Barbara Downs
