Encaustic

My work is well-suited to encaustic. Much of my work is about what is hidden below the surface—literally and figuratively—and encaustic is often painted layer upon layer. It allows me to effectively layer my images, allowing ghost-like snippets of the lower layers to show through.

I also feel that there is a strong connection between encaustic and my earlier love, printmaking. Encaustic can be very gestural and physical, and I work on my encaustic pieces in much the same way that I worked on my etching plates and lithography stones: scratching, scraping, modifying and revising. It gives me line and stroke, like drawing, while still allowing me the color and depth of painting.

See About Encaustic for more information about encaustic paintings.
